Photography week 2

Task 1: Look through the photograph catalogue, and capture 9 different types of imagery.

Rule of thirds

Rule of thirds states than an photograph is most pleasing when its subjects or regions are composed
along imaginary lines which divide the image into thirds — both vertically and horizontally.

My example

Balancing elements
Placing your main subject off-centre, as with the rule of thirds, creates a more interesting photo, but it can leave a void in the scene which can make it feel empty. You should balance the "weight" of your subject by including another object of lesser importance to fill the space.

Leading lines
When we look at a photo our eye is naturally drawn along lines. By thinking about how you place lines in your composition, you can affect the way we view the image, pulling us into the picture, towards the subject, or on a journey "through" the scene. There are many different types of line - straight, diagonal, curvy, zigzag, radial etc - and each can be used to enhance our photo's composition.

Symmetry and pattern

We are surrounded by symmetry and patterns, both natural and man-made., They can make for very eye-catching compositions, particularly in situations where they are not expected. Another great way to use them is to break the symmetry or pattern in some way, introducing tension and a focal point to the scene.

Viewpoint
Before photographing your subject, take time to think about where you will shoot it from. Our viewpoint has a massive impact on the composition of our photo, and as a result it can greatly affect the message that the shot conveys. Rather than just shooting from eye level, consider photographing from high above, down at ground level, from the side, from the back, from a long way away, from very close up, and so on.

Background

How many times have you taken what you thought would be a great shot, only to find that the final image lacks impact because the subject blends into a busy background?

The human eye is excellent at distinguishing between different elements in a scene, whereas a camera has a tendency to flatten the foreground and background, and this can often ruin an otherwise great photo.

Thankfully this problem is usually easy to overcome at the time of shooting - look around for a plain and unobtrusive background and compose your shot so that it doesn't distract or detract from the subject.

Framing
The world is full of objects which make perfect natural frames, such as trees, archways and holes.
By placing these around the edge of the composition you help to isolate the main subject from the outside world.
The result is a more focused image which draws your eye naturally to the main point of interest.

Task 2
Using the Internet, find TEN images you think fit the brief of Freak or Unique (Find images that you could recreate).

This image could be freaky, which is really dependant of the lighting. Maybe if I added some filer effects, the outcome would be enormous compared to the original.

I found this image interesting, due of the fact that his eye is producing a reflection of what appears to be a man starring at him. I personally found this freaky, and the black and white effect makes it even freakier.

Same as before, I like this eye surrealism photograph, as it makes you think deeply about the "behind the scenes" process of it's making.

This image is more leaned toward the unique rather than freak, as this is not what you would usually expect to witness. Remove the mask and the image totally different. This image gave me an idea about my very own final piece, I might consider doing something like this.

I like this image; it fits the unique concept perfectly. It just goes to show you how you can make something amazing, with only a simple photograph of a par of hands.

This one is just like the image above, however, it goes along with the freak concept instead. It is as if the they want to come out of your screen and lick you.

This is an example of dark surrealism photograph. This one goes with freak: it shows what is underneath just a simple face. It is as if it's trying to show your dark side in the mirrors reflection.

This image is essentially the same as above, however it is more blunt at showing it's meaning. It uses the same two people but with different facial expressions as well as pose.

This image is just like the horse mask image from before, although the lighting in this one creates a freaky atmosphere. I will consider using this styled of freaky photography in my final piece.

I love how the background is reflected of off  the man's helmet in this image, it adds a sense of mysteriousness.
